Exciting finale to Mayo AC 2010 League

It began with the Carramore 10k in May and will reach its exciting conclusion with the Westport 5k on Sunday December 12 it is the Mayo AC, C&C Cellular league which once again proved an outstanding success this year. This is the 12th year that this popular race series has been held and the fifth time to be supported by the C&C Cellular Group. Over the years many runners have been discovered through the league races with many going on to achieve national success since. While some of the league prizewinners are already known there is still a lot of running to be done in Westport before the prizes are paid out at the post race presentation in Hotel Westport.

Tribesmen lead Irish teams to victory

Three Galway veteran athletes, who qualified for the British and Irish Masters Home Nations Cross Country, were a central part of winning teams at the weekend.

Team title for Ballina AC men’s team in Hollymount International Road Races

The Hollymount international road races took place last Sunday under the stewardship of Seán Reilly. There is always a high quality field in this race run over a course which encompasses three demanding laps to make the 10K distance in the men's race. The women's race is over 3K and was dominated by Mary Gleeson and her Mayo AC team mates. Ballina AC athletes Michelle Reynolds and her sister Ann Egan put in solid performances. They are used to much longer events but added the snappy 3K event to their repertoire.

Thornton adds another title

As expected, the in-form Gary Thornton of Galway City Harriers won the senior men’s event at the 2010 County Galway Cross-Country Championships.

Terry Fox four mile run in Ballina this Sunday

It’s that time of year again, the evenings are drawing in and the autumn leaves are beginning to fall. It is also time for the annual Terry Fox run and walk which takes place in Ballina on this coming Sunday, October 10 starting at 3pm.

Ballina AC man runs personal best at Berlin marathon

Ballina AC runner Scott Walkin completed the Berlin marathon last weekend in a personal best time of three hours three minutes and three seconds. It marks the culmination of many months’ preparation that paid off on the day. Scott is an integral member of the collective training sessions on Belleek track that have contributed in no small way to the improvement in running times for many club members. These training sessions continue every Thursday starting at 7pm, even in the dark winter months when the track lights come into operation. With Scott having achieved the qualifying time for the world famous Boston marathon with this run, there could be a sizeable contingent from the club travelling to Boston next April.

Thornton in blistering form

Galway’s national 10k champion Gary Thornton completed Loughrea’s inaugral Grey Lake 10k coming home in an exceptional time of 30:01.

Good performances at coastal callenge

At the recent Louisburgh to Westport half marathon Mayo ACs top seed John Byrne won the event in 74:25. Byrne was followed by team mate Robert Malseed finishing in 76:35. The next Mayo AC athletes home in excellent times were Brendan Gill and David Conway. The first woman home with an outstanding run was Mayo AC’s Sarah Syron. Syron who was troubled with injury during the summer months put in a fantastic performance against very tough competition to come home in 1:41:09.

Pioneers of industry in Galway

There were very few industrial plants in Galway in the 1950s. Galway Textile Printers, known locally as the cotton factory, had just opened; there was the hat factory, and there were some small units around town, but that was it. Then the Lemass era arrived, and there was a change in government policy as the government began to actively encourage industries from abroad to locate here.

Mayo AC ladies’ team selected to represent Ireland at European championships

The Mayo AC ladies team have been rewarded for their good performances this year by being selected to take part in the 24th European road race inter club championships in Torres Vedras, Portugal. The event, which will take place on Sunday October 17 over a 15km course, will have top athletic clubs from all over the continent taking part. The Mayo AC team which will compete in the event will be finalised over the coming weeks.
